Scottsdale Is Getting a Second Costco

Scottsdale is getting a second Costco, and this one is a little more significant than your average new retail development. A new Costco is officially underway near Loop 101 and Indian School Road on land belonging to the Salt River-Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. When completed, it will make U.S. history as the first Costco built on tribal land in the country.

A New Costco Near Loop 101

The new location will be built on approximately 21.5 acres near Pima Road and Indian School Road, just north of the Scottsdale Auto Show at Salt River. The project will include a 162,000-square-foot warehouse and approximately 994 parking spaces. That makes this a major addition to an already busy part of the Valley. The development is being done in partnership with Scottsdale-based Molen 360, the same team behind the Scottsdale Auto Show at Salt River.

More Than Just a Costco

The new location is planned to include several features that could make it especially convenient for local shoppers. There will be a fuel center, tire center, on-site car wash, food court, and an expanded ready-to-eat section. The plans also call for a sushi counter and more grab-and-go meal options.

The on-site car wash is an interesting addition, too. It is expected to be one of only a small number of Costco locations nationwide with this feature.

Why This Development Matters to the Community

There is another side to this project that goes beyond shopping. The Salt River-Pima-Maricopa Indian Community says the development will generate sales tax revenue that can support important community needs, including infrastructure, children’s programs, and medical care for the tribe.

The project is also expected to create jobs, adding another economic benefit for the community.

For residents in South Scottsdale and nearby communities, location is probably one of the biggest advantages. Having another Costco closer to this side of town could make regular shopping trips more convenient and potentially reduce the need to drive to the existing Hayden Road location.
